~by Dena Burroughs ANGEL LEBRON Y SU SABOR LATINO AT ZEN SUSHI, IN SILVERLAKE - March 16, 2008 Ok, it was actually at Zen Sushi, but it was a sauna also! My goodness, it was hoooot in there! The shirts clung to the musicians bodies - for a minute it looked like a wet shirt contest - everyone's face was shiny, and I'm pretty sure I lost five pounds of water weight (thank you Zen Sushi.) However, hot as it was, the evening was fun. Angel Lebron y su Sabor Latino do sound good. I've been hearing plenty about them - the dancers seem to love them - and they did not disappoint. Angel has some great people up there with him, Dennis Jiron who is a bandleader in his own right, Pedrito Swing, who has been singing a life time, and Gabriel Gonzalez and Roosevelt Cordova, wonderful voices full of energy that very much cater to the dancers. "Give yourselves a hand!" the singers yell to the dancers periodically, and the dancers do of course! And the symbiotic relationship seems to work for all. The night included six dance performances between band sets. The performers varied between six and forty year olds, all in shiny customs, doing rapid movements that made the watcher gasp at the expectation that one of them would hit a head on the floor, but it never happened. It was L.A. dancing style at its best, with 90 pound girls flying in the air and doing cartwheels up there just to land on the floor looking like they never left it. Very cool. This is a DJVictor Rumbero project, which they want to reproduce every Friday night at Zen Sushi, at 2609 Hyperion Ave, Los Angeles, CA. As long as someone turns up the AC, this should be a great spot.
