WILLIE GONZALEZ AND PEDRO ARROYO AT THE UCRANIAN CULTURAL CENTER -
July 3, 2009
Puerto Rican singer Willie Gonzalez was quoted on
AmericaSalsa.com as saying "Lamentablemente no soy profeta en mi
propia tierra" [Unfortunately I am no a prophet in my own land]
commenting on the reach and acceptance of his music in Puerto Rico.
However, Gonzalez's art was welcomed in South American countries like
Colombia in the height of his popularity at the end of the 80s and early
90s. Testament to this following, the majority of the crowd
present on Friday night at the Ucranian Cultural Center was Colombian, a
group of people easily recognizable by their distinctive accents and
their beautifully shaped women. Gonzalez sang backed by a band made up
half by musicians from Miami [the word is several were part of the Salsa
group called Yambu], and half by L.A. based musicians.
Pedro Arroyo, born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, was also part
of this concert. Wearing an outfit that could have been borrowed
from Alejandro Fernandez, he stepped on the stage, sunglasses and all,
to sing backed by the Chino Espinoza y los Duenos del Son L.A. Salsa
band, as well as the great voice of Renzo Padilla, who was recently in
L.A. singing for Los Hermanos Lebron.
Los Duenos del Son also had a set of their own in between
the two main singers's performances.
