~by Dena Burroughs THE WIFREDO LAM AND CARLOS LUNA EXHIBIT AT MoLAA - June 12th - August 31st, 2008
He is Cuban born, painter and sculptor, Carlos Luna, whose work is now on exhibit at the Museum of Latin American Art (MoLAA), in Long Beach. Luna is a 38 year old rising art star, who left Cuba at 21, moved to Mexico, where he fell in love, became the father of three, and now lives in Miami. Through his art, he attempts to tell his story. He calls himself a citizen of the world, but his Cuban roots scream out of his art… and of his feet – upon hearing the song of Karina Nuvo, the singer who performed Thursday evening at the opening reception of his El Gran Mambo exhibit, the artist, suddenly also bailador, began to dance. The opening reception at MoLAA was an elegant gathering of nice looking, art loving patrons, who presented themselves to be first to see Carlos Luna's work, which will be from here on open to the public, until August 31st. Alongside Luna’s work is the exhibit of art master, 20th century Modernist, Wifredo Lam, whose work blends the influence of European artists, such as Pablo Picasso, with Lam’s own Afro-Cuban roots. The side by side exhibits are testimony to the influence that Cuba’s artistic exports have in our cultural world. MoLAA is located at 628 Alamitos Ave, in Long Beach. The price at the door is $7.50, and free on Friday and Sunday. It is a well put together exhibit, well worth the visit. In the words of artist Carlos Luna, “Gracias al Museo de Arte Latinoamericano por permitir que el mambo siga sonando.” (Thanks to MoLAA, for allowing mambo to continue to be heard.)
