OSCAR D'LEON AT THE MAYAN - April 12, 2007
I had so much fun at this concert that I'm still paying the bill for
my exhaustion. But it was worth it! Oscar D'Leon performed
with the energy that is customary of him, and the club was so packed it
felt more like a Saturday.
Following are some pictures. After them I'm posting a few of
your stories about Oscar D' Leon. By the way, Stella Pagan and I met at
the door and the ticket was delivered as promised. Thanks to those
of you that played along!
Oh! DJ Pedro El Sabroso playing La Lupe was also pretty awesome!

"When
I think of Oscar De Leon, I smile, simply because so many happy
memories come to mind. Not only is he an incredible singer but he
and his music have literally been a musical staple at ALL of my
family functions while growing up. My grandmother swore listening
to salsa music while cooking enhanced the flavor of her food in
combination with her love of cooking. As soon as I would smell the
salt pork sizzling, Oscar's voice, the sound of the trumpets and
"ting" of the cowbell would go blaring in the background. His albums
were always strewn across her floor in front of her record player
and his voice would just serenade all of us with stories that
mostly the adults would understand, but in my young little
heart I felt I knew what he was talking about. His strong voice was
played over and over again, through the cooking, the dominos games,
the dance-off's, and some nights when the coquito was a little too
strong - the fights! Hahaha! It is artists like Oscar De Leon, that
when you listen to him, they bring you home in some wonderful "I've
been here before" way. Aaahhh! It's a simple, yet very fond feeling
and nothing compares to the talent and passion of such music."

"...Well I can't say much about Oscar De Leon, only that he was
the first Salsa performance I ever saw. I went to the Congress
of '04 I think it was and he was there live with his son (I
didn't even know he had a son!!!!!)...Well anywho, I'd only been
dancing for a little bit and I had met Rogelio (Moreno) at J.C.
Fandago --way toooooo long ago..lol-- and he invited me to go.
So I bought a ticket and stuff and I ended up being right up in
front. You remember Wally don't you? He was right in front too
and he introduced me to him later on. Back then the Hollywood
Park Casino was way too crowded because they hadn't gotten the
big tents for the outside yet. Or I think they just had 1 tent
for the performances and all the dancing was upstairs (like they
have Fiesta Del Barrio these days) So it was crowded and people
were dancing but I wanted to see Oscar De Leon. Well they made
me get off the dance floor and I didn't get to be that close
anymore. Girl he was toooo sweaty. I swear some of that stuff
was splashing on me. So yeah my first time seeing a Salsa
Celebrity in concert and it was him. The one thing I won't
forget is his huge mustache and bald head....but that only
accentuates his SMILE! That man didn't stop smiling ALLLLL
night! I loved that. He was all active on the stage (as little
as the stage was) and kicking up a storm with his excitement. I
loved it! Well that's my story about him and my experience with
him... All in all, this was fun. Win or lose the ticket, I
don't care. I'm glad I shared it with you! Thanks mama!" - T.R. |

"Whats up......I never told you this but Oscar and I are
brothers. I can tell you stories endless stories of about
the two of us growing up together. I can faintly remember a
story he once told me about some chic he danced with at a
graduation party many years ago." - J.R.
[yeah, funny guy! lol]

"Hi . My best Oscar De Leon story would be when I boarded a
LACSA flight to LAX from Barranquilla, Colombia. The flight
originated from Caracas, Venezuela and stopped in
Barranquilla to pick up more passengers. The plane was
full, and me and my brother were the last ones to board the
plane. The flight attendant told us to sit wherever we
found an empty seat. As I looked for my seat, I found an
empty one next to a familiar face, of course Oscar wearing
jeans, a white t-shirt, and a black leather jacket sitting
next to the window. He told me he was on his way to Panama
for a performance. He was also nice enough to sign
autographs, and take pictures with the other passengers." -

"I have just one memorable moment Oscar and I…And it took place
one night at my favorite spot JC Fandangos (back then) …This was
a couple of years ago but the nervousness feeling will never go
away…The place was so packed everyone just enjoying every
movement of energy that this man oooozzzeed on stage…Well my
friend Elena and I were really close to the stage and temptation
just overwhelmed her the next thing I knew we were both on stage
dancing with Oscar…The moment was unforgivable... She danced
with him…I danced with him…Incredible to be on stage with him…to
touch him…too feel his breathe so close singing lloraras….wow…(
btw lloraras is my favorite song no matter what anyone says)…I
was star stuck by this man then and now… He is amazing singer….oooo
I have pics too…." - M.A. |
"I can't play but I have story. One of the clubs in
Chicago hired me and a friend of mine to dance during his
concert. They put us on these two balcony like things on
each side of the stage. Low enough to be seen, but high
enough to be way out of reach from the drunk guys below.
That fool actually climbed the railing up to where I was so
he could dance with me 'cause I wouldn't come down when he
asked us to come and dance on the stage with some guys he
had pulled up from the audience. All I kept thinking was "I
hope he has insurance cause if his old ass falls that ish is
NOT going to be my fault." LOL He made it up there with a
mike in one hand no less.
 and
kept singing like the climb hadn't even worn him out.
I was impressed but I still didn't take my happy ass down
from that balcony. LOL" "B.G."
[sorry but this was too funny not to post!]
