Congress - Highlights - Sunday,
May 28th, 2006
CHINO ESPINOZA Y LOS DUENOS DEL
SON - So it could be argued that I am a bit biased, but dang, these
guys are good! They sounded great at Congress, and... how often do
you see a full set of Costa Rican percussionists?!?
THE PUERTO RICAN MASTERS - WITH
LUIS PERICO ORTIZ, CANO ESTREMERA AND ADALBERTO SANTIAGO -
Cano Estremera, self introduced as
"El Albino, El Asesino del Codigo de Da Vinci" - We loved him, his
manner, his humor, his soneos. The audience ate up his performance
like candy. At least from where I was standing - first row - Cano
seems to have gotten the most excited audience out of the last two
nights of Congress. People sang with him, laughed, dance, could
barely stay still. He'll be back in Long Beach on the 9th of July for
the Colombian Festival and I bet, like me, many others will plan to be
there.
I must say at one point the dancers
disappointed me. Once Cano was off stage, Luis Perico Ortiz took
some time to acknowledge Oscar Hernandez' presence, as well as Adalberto
Santiago's, and a few others, just to get interrupted by the
clave-clapping of salseros who can't be a minute without jumping around.
One thing is Walter Segundo telling half lame jokes from the stage on a
regular basis at the local clubs, and another one is to have Luis Perico
Ortiz, once in a blue moon in our town, taking a few minutes on the
stage to recognize equally amazing people. Don't we not know the
difference?!? ugghh
Anywayssss.... I loved the Puerto
Rican Masters, I loved Cano. What a great evening!
